Port of Lake Charles is the eleventh largest industrial seaport in the nation. The Calcasieu Ship Channel is the waterway that connects Lake Charles with the Gulf of Mexico. This modern ship channel is mainly used to import materials to Lake Charles for processing and export refined products including chemicals and gasoline with one of the best safety records in the United States.
Lake Charles is the proud home of McNeese State University, a public Louisiana university offering a variety of courses with over 8,000 students. Delta School of Business & Technology, LA Institute and Sowela Technical Community College which offer vocational courses are also located in Lake Charles.
Casinos in Lake Charles, Louisiana are among the best for casino gambling, dining, hotels, shopping and entertainment. Pinnacle Entertainment opened L'Auberge du Lac Casino in Lake Charles in May 2005. The name of the casino resort comes from the French meaning "The Inn on the Lake". Pinnacle will soon open a second casino in Lake Charles, Sugarcane Bay Casino. Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. founded in 1992, is a Riverboat Casino with two casino gaming boats in Lake Charles and was the first gaming operation in the South. L'Auberge du Lac Casino and Isle of Capri Casino are located just across the lake from each other in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Delta Downs Racetrack, Hotel & Casino is located near Lake Charles in Vinton offering Louisiana funfilled horseracing. Near Lake Charles, Louisiana is Coushatta Casino Resort located in Kinder, Louisiana. Coushatta Casino opened in 1995 and reflects the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana's sincere commitment to comfort and convenience for its guests.
